Traditional Hmong comfort food consists of simple staples such as white rice, boiled greens such as mustard greens with meat. Hmong cuisine has been influenced by other cultures as the Hmong lived among the Chinese, Vietnamese, Thais and Laotians. Common spices, herbs and ingredients used in Hmong cooking today are Thai chili peppers, lemongrass, garlic, ginger, cilantro, mint and green onions. Common sauces also include oyster sauce, fish sauce, sriracha and soy sauce.
Food is a very important part of Hmong family gatherings and celebrations. One of the most popular dishes served during parties is eggrolls. Hmong eggrolls are different than the typical eggrolls served in Chinese restaurants. Hmong eggrolls generally consists of bean thread noodles, cabbage, onions, carrots, cilantro, eggs, and ground pork or beef. It is rolled up in a thin wrapper, then deep fried. Other favorite dishes include papaya salad, pho, khao poon, beef laab, sticky rice, tapioca, and sweet pork.
